The Springfield Fire Department’s bomb squad blew up an unattended item last night in downtown Springfield.
Police sealed off the area after it was found near Grant and Mt. Vernon.
Fire Chief David Pennington says the item was not an explosive device.
The bomb squad destroyed it just to be safe.
The Bomb Squad responded to the area of 500 S. Grant at 7:38 pm Monday in reference to an unattended package in a public area. The item was examined by the Bomb Squad, and no explosive component or threat was associated to the device and no criminal aspect was determined.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion.
No official word yet on why police and fire were called to the scene.
