A World War II solider from Liberal, Missouri, is set to be buried at Liberal City Cemetery next month.
Liberal is about 40 miles north of Joplin.
In June 1944, U.S. Army Corporal Julius G. Wolfe was assigned to Company B, 149th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater.
On June 6, Wolfe was aboard Landing Craft Infantry (Large) 92, along with roughly 200 other servicemembers, en route to land on Omaha Beach, in Normandy, France. As LCI-92 steamed toward the shore, it struck an underwater mine which caused the craft to burst into flames.
Wolfe’s remains were not accounted for after the war.
Wolfe was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in August of 2023.
Wolfe was 20 years old.
Greenlawn Funeral Home North in Springfield will perform the graveside services before Cpl. Wolfe’s burial.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, April 5.
