(KTTS) – The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam.
Police have received complaints from citizens saying they have been getting calls from someone identifying themselves as sheriff’s Office employees.
The scammers refer to court costs that haven’t been paid or warrants that have been issued.
The caller typically identifies themselves as either the Sheriff or another current employee. They then demand money.
Sheriff Chris Jennings says, “I want to remind everyone that neither this Sheriff’s Office or any other Sheriff in the state operates like that. The scammer attempts to intimidate or scare the victim. Please do not fall for this. My best advice is to hang up on the caller. If you have questions about this or want reassurance feel free to call us. Do not give anyone personal or financial information on the phone.”
