(KTTS News) — People are mourning the loss of a Hermann, Missouri police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

Detective Sergeant Mason Griffith, 34, was an officer in Hermann.

The Highway Patrol says Griffith and Hermann Police Officer Adam Sullentrup, 31, tried to arrest 35-year-old Kenneth Lee Simpson Sunday night at a convenience store in Hermann.

He had warrants out for his arrest.

But Simpson shot Griffith to death and wounded Sullentrup, leaving him in serious but stable condition.

Simpson was arrested Monday afternoon after police fired tear gas into a home where he had barricaded himself inside.

Griffith served more than one community.

He was worked for Hermann, Missouri.

But he was also the part-time police chief in the town of Rosebud.

He leaves behind his wife and two sons.

His funeral is set for Sunday at Owensville High School.
