WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing senators’ questions for the first time, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson is forcefully defending her record as a federal judge, telling senators she will rule “from a position of neutrality” if she is confirmed as the first Black woman on the high court.

In what one senator described as “a trial by ordeal,” Jackson attempted to deflect GOP criticism and also highlight the empathetic style that she has frequently described.

Several Republicans used their questioning to brand Jackson and Democrats as soft on crime, an emerging theme in GOP midterm election campaigns.

Original Story

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson is facing senators’ questions for the first time as Democrats push to quickly confirm the only Black female justice in the court’s history.

Jackson listened to more than four hours of senators’ opening statements on Monday as the Judiciary Committee hearings on her nomination got underway.

As senators began 30-minute rounds of grilling on Tuesday, Jackson was responding to their specific points.

Those include charges by some Republicans that she has been too lenient in sentencing on criminal matters.
