Authorities say a man who attempted to break into an apartment in North Springfield is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Thursday.
Richard McCormick was 62 years old.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire outside of an apartment complex to the east of the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds around 3:30 p.m. Police approached the complex from the north, and found a man attempting to force his way inside of an apartment with a rifle.
Police ordered the man to drop his gun, and when he did not comply, used low-lethality bean bag rounds in an attempt to incapacitate him.
The attempt failed, and police say McCormick turned and pointed his rifle at authorities.
Officers then fired on the suspect, who later died in a hospital from his injuries.
Police attempted to save the man’s life before he died.
The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave.
