Teacher Killed In Crosswalk Outside Of Benton Elementary In Neosho

UPDATE: Authorities have released the name of the woman who was hit and killed by a car while working in the crosswalk outside of Benton Elementary Wednesday.

The Neosho Police Department says Angel Hayes, 48, was hit by a driver who was 88-years-old. The man told officers his foot got stuck between the brake pedal and the accelerator.

The car he was driving hit Hayes in the parent pick up line, then hit another car.

Hayes had been a teacher for 25 years. The superintendent say she left behind a mother and her adopted son.

School officials have cancelled school for Benton Elementary students and staff for the remainder of the week.

Students, teachers, family, and friends are mourning the loss of a school teacher who died after she was struck and killed at a school crosswalk.

District officials say it happened at Benton Elementary after classes were over around 3:30.

The superintendent with the Neosho School District says “this is a very tragic accident.”

Counselors will be available for students and Neosho School District team members.

The district plans to release more information Thursday morning.

A Neosho teacher passed away on Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while performing crossing duty at Benton Elementary.

According to Neosho police, the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. and details are still under investigation. It was raining at the time of the incident.

"This is a very tragic accident," said Dr. Jim Cummins, superintendent of Neosho School District. "I think we are all in a state of shock and want to make sure we do everything we can to support our team and students in this difficult time."

We are sorry to report this news but due to the tragic loss of a Benton Elementary teacher this afternoon, school will be cancelled for Benton elementary students and staff for the remainder of the week.

Counselors will be available for Benton families tomorrow and Friday at the Neosho Civic Center starting at 9:00 a.m. We will also have counselors available for any students or team members in need at our other school locations.
