A new Missouri law will largely do away with the merit system for state employees.
The legislation was sponsored by Senator Mike Kehoe of Jefferson City, who has a large portion of state workers in his district.
He says it will add efficiency to state government because it would reflect the way businesses are run
Maria Chappelle-Nadal of University City voted against the policy when it was being debated.
She thinks it fails to provide security for experienced employees who bring important knowledge to the workplace.
Republicans largely embraced the new law, contending it will add efficiency to state government.
It takes effect August 28th.
