Highway Patrol Trooper Survives Shooting, Suspect Critical

A Highway Patrol trooper has been released from the hospital after an officer-involved shooting near Mansfield.

Sergeant Jeff Kinder says Trooper Robert Crewse, 39, was checking out a suspicious vehicle around 10:30 Wednesday morning on a county road.

Both the trooper and a suspect were shot.

Crewse was shot twice, but his injuries were superficial.

Kinder told Scripps affiliate KSHB that one of the shots grazed Crewse in the head, while the other hit him in the vest.

He told KTTS News that Crewse was conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital.

KY3 reports Crewse and Mansfield Police returned fire, hitting the suspect several times.

KSHB reports the suspect is in critical condition at a Springfield hospital.
