(KTTS News) — Two men from Springfield are charged in connection with a deadly shooting this week at a home near National and Turner.

42-year-old Jimmie Johnson, III, from Springfield, was found early Wednesday morning in the backyard of a home.

He died at the hospital.

23-year-old Ronald Curnow is charged with first-degree murder.

He’s being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.

22-year-old Payne Morse is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence.

He’s in the Greene County Jail on $50,000 bond.

The Springfield Police Department Homicide Unit has identified two Springfield residents, Ronald L. Curnow, 23, and Payne R. Morse, 22, as suspects in the May 3 homicide of Jimmie E. Johnson III.

On May 3, 2023, Morse was arrested. The case was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office and Morse was charged with being a Felon Possession of a Firearm and Tampering with Evidence. Morse is being held in the Greene County Jail with a $50,000 bond.

On May 4, 2023, Curnow was arrested. The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the case and Curnow was charged with 1st Degree Murder and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Curnow is being held in the Greene County Jail with no bond.

The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are merely allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Original Release

On May 3, 2023, at 1:54 a.m., Springfield Police Department officers responded to a report of someone who had been shot behind a residence at 2304 N. National Ave. When officers arrived, they located a man lying in the back yard with a gunshot wound.

The victim, 42-year-old Jimmie E. Johnson III, from Springfield, was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Johnson’s family has been notified.

A suspect has not yet been identified in this case.
