(KTTS News) — Springfield Police are investigating a murder-suicide.

Police were called to Cox North Hospital on Tuesday for two men who’d been attacked with a hammer.

Phillip Campbell, 53, died at the hospital.

But a second man survived.

Police say 35-year-old Vincent Odom attacked the men at a business in the 45-hundred block of West Chestnut.

He then killed himself.

On Nov. 1, 2022, at approximately 1:16 p.m., the Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Cox North Hospital at 1423 N. Jefferson St., in reference to two males with injuries from an assault with a hammer. After talking to one of the victims at the hospital, officers determined the assault occurred at 4525 W. Chestnut Expressway. When officers arrived at the Chestnut Expressway location, they found the crime scene from the assault and another deceased male.

One of the male victims, identified as Phillip N. Campbell, 53, from Springfield, had sustained life-threatening injuries and was later transported to another local hospital for treatment.  On Nov. 2, 2022, Campbell succumbed to his injuries. Campbell’s family has been notified.

The second male victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unit investigated the incident and determined the suspect, Vincent Odom, 35, from Springfield, attacked both victims inside a building at 4525 W. Chestnut Expressway. Shortly after the assault, Odom walked outside and committed suicide. Odom’s family has been notified.

Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

This incident marks the 15th homicide investigation for 2022.
