Governor Signs Second Amendment Preservation Act Into Law Today

Governor Mike Parson has signed House Bill 85 into law Saturday, which establishes the Second Amendment Preservation Act.

The act goes into law Saturday. The bill would prohibit the enforcement of federal gun law by local law enforcement agencies. If an officer or department enforces a federal gun law, they could be sued or fined.

The bill was introduced by Representative Jered Taylor (R-Republic) in January.

Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott has indicated skepticism over the ramifications of the bill, but says he is not opposed to the intent, which he believes is to prevent a federal gun grab.

The Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade (D-Springfield) has issued a much stronger statement, condemning the bill as “radical, dangerous, and obviously unconstitutional.” Quade says the bill would allow criminals who violate federal gun laws to sue police officers for a minimum of $50,000 for cooperating in any way with federal investigations.
