Springfield Fire Department Says “Stay Off The Ice”

The Springfield Fire Department wants to remind the public to stay off the ice.

While playing on a frozen pond may seem inviting, this is a very dangerous activity that could lead to a life-threatening emergency.

The surface of the ice may appear solid enough to support your weight, the reality is much different.

While temperatures are very cold, the fluctuation does not allow for ice to become thick enough to safely walk or play on.

If you witness someone playing on ice or has fallen through, the Fire Department reminds you of these important actions:

  1. Call 9-1-1 so that the Water Rescue Team is promptly notified.
  2. If it is safe to do so, maintain voice and visual contact with the victim.
  3. Be prepared to assist in guiding responders to the location.
  4. Do not attempt a rescue.
