Local health leaders say more than 1,000 people have been admitted to hospitals in Springfield with COVID-19 over the last two months.
CoxHealth President and CEO Steve Edwards says his hospital system has about 1,000,000 people in its service area, but only about 18% of them are under a masking ordinance.
He says that’s why hospitals are so full.
Edwards also says he has deep respect for Governor Parson and considers him a friend, but says they disagree on the position of mandatory masking and “it’s costing lives.”
Edwards says about 11% of patients at Cox who are admitted with COVID-19 are dying, and if you’re over the age of 80, that number is between 40 and 60%.
