Springfield Police Step Up Enforcement Of Face Mask Ordinance

Springfield Police are stepping up enforcement of the city’s face mask ordinance after reports of college students headed downtown last weekend without masks.

During a COVID-19 presentation with the health department, Police Chief Paul Williams said officers checked out twelve places to make sure businesses followed the law.

He says most people were following the ordinance, although there were a couple of businesses that didn’t follow the 50-percent occupancy rule.

Williams says the main problem was long lines outside bars.

He says a lot of people didn’t stay six-feet apart.

So he says police will pay special attention to that this weekend.

Williams says police have not any citations.

He says officers are doing their part to educate people first before issuing a ticket.
