Mercy is trying to keep patients as safe as possible during high-risk surgeries.

On Thursday, the hopital released a video highlighting a new technique they’ve implemented to limit risks during these procedures.

A tracheostomy is often performed to assist patients who are trying to get off a ventilator.

At Mercy in St. Louis, COVID-19 has progressed to the point Doctors are entertaining the idea of performing a tracheostomy but wanted to do it in the safest way possible.

Essentially, they bring the Operating Room to the Intensive Care Unit for this procedure and limit the OR team to 4-5 people.

The OR Team minimizes contamination by using a clear tarp barrier throughout the surgery.

A operating room biohazard bag was adapted to fit the needs for this procedure, but they’re hoping to have a legitimate drape created for this purpose.
