Eight civil investigative demands were issued today in part of the collaborative efforts with Amazon to combat price gouging.
Missouri’s attorney general announced he is demanding information from third-party Amazon sellers about price gouging amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Attorney General Eric Schmitt said he issued the subpoena-like demands to eight Missouri-based Amazon sellers, who are under investigation for allegedly charging two to 19 times as much for items like hand sanitizer and masks as they did before the pandemic.
With these demands, sellers will have to provide exact information about their pricing and sales of these items.
“Price gouging is something that we’re taking incredibly seriously, and we’re exploring all avenues in order to protect Missourians during these unprecedented times,” says Attorney General Schmitt. “Our partnership with Amazon is making it easier for our office to find and investigate these potential price gougers, and we’re going to continue to work with Amazon as we move forward through this crisis.”
Anyone who sees substantially inflated prices during the pandemic, particularly medical products and other health-related necessities, is encouraged to report it to the Missouri Attorney General’s Office by calling the Consumer Protection hotline at 800-392-8222 or by submitting a complaint online at ago.mo.gov/civil-division/consumer/price-gouging .
