Boys & Girls Club Adapts During COVID-19 Crisis, Offering Virtual Experience and Distributing Meals

The Boys & Girls Club of Springfield are continuing their mission despite the social distancing that’s become the new norm during this pandemic.

On March 18, the Clubs had to close their doors to the public, but the decision was not made lightly.

Chief Executive Officer, Brandy Harris, says “It was an extremely difficult decision to close our Clubs, but we made this decision based on guidelines issued by the CDC and local health authorities.”

The next step was creating a plan for those in need of food assistance while their doors are closed.

With their whatever it takes motto, staff jumped into planning and executing a food distribution plan with the help of Springfield Grocers, Crosslines, Care to Learn and The Order.

In just 7 days, nearly 7,000 meals were served or delivered to Club families.

The Club is keeping kids engaged, despite the need to stay home and socially distance.

Club members are able to stay engaged and continue to learn through virtual connections on Facebook.

Families who didn’t have access to digital platforms were given program kits at food pick-up stations.

“Thanks to our amazing program team, through this virtual program we are keeping the “feel” of a Boys & Girls Club,” says Program Director, Nikki Kiruki.

Everyone is feeling a sense of crisis right now and there’s no better time for the services of the Boys & Girls Club.

During the pandemic, it’s important to keeps programs running to ensure each kid, teen and family that needs them have access.

The Club will work toward reversing learning loss, restoring a feeling of safety and giving kids something to do until they’re able to reopen their doors.
