Top health officials in the United States are pushing back on the claim that ibuprofen can exacerbate the coronavirus infection.

The source of the claim comes from French Health Minister Olivier Veran, claiming the pain-killer could boost an enzyme that would accelerate the disease.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said while appearing on Barstool Sports: Pardon My Take podcast that the claim is unfounded.

“[It] may be true, may not, but there is no good scientific evidence that says ibuprofen can make coronavirus worse,” he said.

The institute he heads also reported the same thing to the Los Angeles times, saying that more research was needed to establish any effects.

The World Health Organization says it recommends using paracetamol until studies can be concluded.
