The Greene County Collector says some information in a study by Wallethub on property taxes is not correct.

Here is an explanation from Collector Leah Betts.

“I think it’s important for citizens to know the truth, good or bad. However, this study has an error in it (likely many, many errors).

They are using a vehicle worth 25,000.

In Missouri you are taxed on 1/3 of that value (which equals the Assessed value).

That would be 8,333.33.

A random tax levy in our area is 5.5499 (that’s pretty average).

That would make the tax bill on that vehicle approximately 462.00.

They quoted 623.00.

That is quite a difference.”

Original Story:

A study done by Wallethub, an online company that focuses on finances, says Missouri has the fifth highest property taxes in the union.

The study focused on data on vehicle property and real estate property taxes. It said Missouri had a 2.5% effective vehicle tax rate.

Taxes on a $25,000 car usually came out to around $623.

Missouri ranked 27th best in real estate property taxes.
