Residents of Taney County are concerned after dozens of trucks carrying hog waste have made their way past the Missouri-Arkansas border to dump it onto Missouri fields.

That hog waste comes from a now defunct hog farm in Newton County, Arkansas, that was shut down over environmental concerns focusing on that same waste. Officials were concerned that the feces and urine were making their way into the Buffalo National River.

Locals say 15 to 20 trucks pass into Taney County every day, and they are worried that waste will make its way into their drinking water.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources say nothing illegal is happening, however.

They say the trucks must comply with setback limits and cannot apply manure on steep slopes. They encourage people who have concerns to contact them.

Using various kinds of animal waste as a fertilizer is not a new practice.
