Everything You Need To Know About Helmet Safety This Cycling Season

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month and the Brian Injury Association of Missouri wants to help keep you safe this spring.

When you dig your bicycles out of the garage, make sure you have a proper helmet!

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says there are nearly half a million bike related injuries per year yet less than half of Americans use a helmet.

A properly fitted helmet is the single most effective way to prevent injury while riding a bike, reducing chances of severe brain injury by 88%.

On average, one in seven children will experience some sort of brain injury in a bike-related accident.

Brain injuries account for 63% of bicycle fatalities in kids under the age of 19. More kids die each year from bicycle injuries than from accidental poisoning, falls, firearm injuries and many illnesses.

It’s important to replace your helmet after it’s been in an accident.

Any small crack in the surface of your helmet can reduce how effective it will be in preventing brain injury.

Keep these tips in mind when picking out your spring head gear:

  • You should NOT be able to twist or pull your helmet to remove it.
  • When you put your helmet on, always wear it flat on the top of your head.
  • Your helmet should fit snug, but not cause indentation on your skin.
  • The front of your helmet should not obstruct your vision and should be about an inch above your eyebrows.
  • Always wear your helmet with the chin strap fastened and tightened to where you can snugly fit a finger between your chin and the strap.
