Springfield Man Shot By Police on Kansas Turnpike

A Springfield man attempting to elude authorities Thursday night has been arrested following an officer-involved shooting.

40-year-old Robert Knapp was fleeing police on a turnpike east of Topeka when he was grazed by one of multiple bullets fired by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

Investigators said the pursuit started Thursday night around 7:45 PM after a trooper tried to stop a pickup truck with stolen tags on the Kansas Turnpike in Douglas County.

Knapp refused to pull over, driving west toward Topeka until troopers were able to deploy tire-deflating devices and tactical maneuvers to stop the truck.

That’s when Knapp rammed the patrol car, leading the trooper to fire multiple shots.

Knapp and the trooper were taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries and both are expected to fully recover.

Knapp was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections and charged with aggravated battery, possesion of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possession of stolen property, criminal damage to property, interference with a law enforcement officer and fleeing or attempting to elude.
