It’s day two of the murder trial for Tommy Morris, Jr., the ex-con who hit and killed a woman after a pursuit with Springfield Police back in April 2018.
Dana Sowards was killed in the crash at Scenic and Mt. Vernon.
A Springfield Police officer testified Wednesday that drug tests showed Morris had meth and marijuana in his blood when he hit Sowards’ car.
Police say Morris was speeding.
But the defense says his accelerator sometimes got stuck and he didn’t have the money to pay for it.
Prosecutors later countered that $1,200 dollars was found on Morris, more than enough to pay to fix any stuck accelerator.
Morris turned down a second chance for a plea deal when the trial resumed Wednesday.
Prosecutors offered to drop the drug charges against him if he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
Morris again decided to let the judge decide his fate.
That means if he’s convicted of murder and the two drug charges, he could get three life sentences.
