Although 24 New Cases of Chronic Wasting Disease, No New Counties Affected

The Missouri Department of Conservation says that 24 new cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been found among the Missouri deer population.

The good news is that while the disease has spread among different deer, it hasn’t really spread geographically. There are no new counties within which the deer have been found.

CWD is a prion disease, which means its caused when misfolded proteins cause a chain reaction of misfolding and eventual critical organ failure.

CWD has not been found in humans, but experts are concerned that it could jump the species barrier.
