CBCO: Critical Shortage Of Type O Negative Blood

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks (CBCO), the exclusive provider of blood products to over forty area hospitals, is issuing an urgent appeal for type O negative blood. A strong donor response is needed immediately to avoid a blood shortage of this type.

Current reserves of type O negative are at critical levels. Less than a one-day reserve is on hand. CBCO strives to maintain at least a three-day supply of blood to be ready for any emergency.

“In an emergency situation, type O negative is used quite often because of its universal nature,” CBCO Media Relations Representative Chris Pilgrim said. “Around six percent of the total population has this blood type, but the demand for this type is constant and exceeds that number. If you are type O negative, we need you to give now to help area patients.”

There are four CBCO Donor Centers in the Ozarks, along with mobile blood drives that take place in various towns within the CBCO service area. CBCO Donor Centers include:

Springfield – 220 W. Plainview Rd. Open Monday thru Friday 8 am to 6 pm. Open Saturday 7 am to 1 pm. Open Sunday 9 am to 3 pm.

Joplin – North Park Mall – 101 N. Rangeline Rd. Open Monday thru Friday 11 am to 6 pm.

Bentonville – 1400 SE Walton Blvd. Open Monday thru Thursday 11 am to 6 pm. Open Friday 8 am to 2 pm.

Springdale – 3503 S. Thompson Rd. Open Monday – Thursday 11 am to 6 pm. Open Friday 8 am to 2 pm.

Donors may also go online to www.cbco.org to find a blood drive near them. As always, CBCO thanks the thousands of supporters for continuing to give life to your community.
