Suspect In Deputy, Trooper Shooting Charged In Van Buren

Suspect Charged In Carter County Officer Involved Shooting

The suspect of a standoff that ended in an a deputy and trooper being shot in Van Buren has now been charged.

The Carter County Sheriff’s Office says  James D. Cummings, age 31, VanBuren, is charged with four counts of assault 1st degree and four counts of armed criminal action. The court denied Cummings bond.

Authorities say Cummings finally surrender at 5 p.m. Friday after a nearly all-day standoff.

The two shot were Trooper Caleb McCoy and Deputy Brigg Pierson.

Pierson sustained injuries to his leg, groin, and chest, and had to be taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.

The shooting investigation is being conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.
