Man Drowns After Running Away From Taney County Deputies Trying To Initiate A Traffic Stop

A man has drowned after he tried to get away from deputies in a traffic stop in Hollister.

The Taney County Sheriff’s Office says a sports bike driver wouldn’t stop for them through a roundabout on East Highway 76, he then turned onto Lake Shore Drive ditched his bike and jumped over a guardrail.

A short time later deputies could hear the man yell for help.

He was found 15 to 20 feet from the shore.

The name of the victim hasn’t been released.

On August 11, 2019 at approx. 0301 am. a Taney County Deputy Sheriff attempted to stop a sport bike motorcycle on Bus. 65 in Hollister, Mo.

The sport bike driver refused to stop and went north bound through the roundabout onto E. Mo. 76, then turned left onto Lake Shore Dr. Approx. ¼ mile down Lake Shore Dr. the driver laid the bike down and ran on foot. He jumped over the guard rail and went down the embankment toward Lake Taneycomo.

The deputy remained on the roadway and did not chase the driver over the guard rail. He was able to see the man running out of sight in the edge of Lake Taneycomo. Within a short time the Deputy could hear the man yell for help.

At approx. 0303 am. Western Taney County Water Rescue and Taney County Ambulance was immediately called to respond. The Deputy then was able to make his way over the guard rail and down the steep embankment to the area he was last able to see the man but was unable to locate him.

When Western Water Rescue arrived they located the man in approx. 7-10 ft of water approx. 15-20 ft from the shore. The man was submerged in the water and deceased. It is believed the man is in his mid 20’s and from Taney County.

The Coroner was contacted and will make a positive identification. The Coroner will release the name of the deceased when family has been notified.
