Community Blood Center Making A Plea For Pre-Holiday Blood Donations

With the long Memorial Day holiday weekend on the way, the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks says it’s at less than a one day supply of all negative blood types.

CBCO Spokesman Chris Pilgrim says the need for blood at local hospitals can spike during summer holidays and vacations. “Vacation travel means more vehicle accidents, which can result in an increased need. There’s also a drop in donations during this busy time of year,” Pilgrim said.

Pilgrim says the blood center is asking all eligible donors to give, but particularly folks with negative blood types.

“Type O negative is the universal blood type,” Pilgrim said. “It can be given to anyone in an emergency situation. It is vital that we have an ample supply of O negative blood on hand. But again, a strong response by donors of all types will help ensure the supply is ready for any emergency that may arise.”

The CBCO’s Thomson Donor Center at 220 west Plainview Road is open 8 a.m. through 6 p.m. through Friday, with Saturday hours of 7 a.m. through 1 p.m.

The donor center will be closed on Memorial Day.
