Zookeepers are welcoming their newest primate to the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield.

Sebastian the Siamang came to Springfield from the Montgomery Zoo in Montgomery, Alabama.

The zoo says just like a typical five-year-old, Sebastian is cute and curious.

Following a mandatory quarantine period, he will reside with the zoo’s female siamang, Makali.

Siamang pairs usually mate for life. In December, Dickerson Park Zoo mourned the death of male siamang, Lucu.

Working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoos, Dickerson Park Zoo has been looking for a male siamang to join Makali.

“Sebastian is doing very well,” said zoo spokeswoman Joey Powell. “Although he’s not yet on exhibit, guests may catch a glimpse of him in the quarantine quarters behind the siamang yard. He’s only there until his quarantine time and introduction to Makali are complete. We expect him to be out around mid-May.”
