14th Annual Polar Plunge Raises Over $53,000 For Special Olympics

An annual tradition that’s been going on for 14 years was held this weekend in Springfield.

The Polar Plunge had a total of 151 brave men and women from around the area take a chilly dip at The Ski Shack.

The fund raising event raised over $53,000 to date that will go towards Special Olympics Missouri.

Organizers of the plunge still hope to raise an additional $7,000 to reach the goal of $60,000.

The 14th Annual Polar Plunge on March 2 at Springfield was a splashing success, raising $53,686.31 to date.

Their Reason for Freezin’… the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri!

Online fundraising is still ongoing. Organizers of the plunge still hope to raise an additional $7,000 to reach the goal of $60,000 Donations can be made at www.somo.org/plunge.

Top individual fundraisers included the following:
1st Place Fundraiser – James Craigmyle ($5,815)
2nd Place Fundraiser – Dustin Kendrick ($5,051)
3rd Place Fundraiser – Tim Haynes ($5,000)

Top Fundraising Team – Knights and Ladies ($1,085)
Top Law Enforcement Team – Greene County Sheriff Department ($18,561)
Top Fundraising School – Pleasant Hope High School

Competition for the Golden Plunger was steep this year. Participants are encouraged to come in costume and compete for the chance to take home the “golden plunger.”
Group 1st Place – Greene County Sheriff Department (Inmates)
Group 2nd Place – Springfield PD (Officers)
Group 3rd Place – Sarcoxie STUCO (Color Run)

Individual 1st Place – Leroy Matthews (Baywatch)
Individual 2nd Place – Johnny Green (Color Run)
Individual 3rd Place – Rhonda Axtel (Moose Lady)

This year’s event was held in conjunction with Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D and Springfield PD. Presenting sponsors included Gold Mountain Communications, HyVee, Ski Shack, iHeart Radio, Ozarks Fox, BWI Sanitation, Pomeroy Construction, Yoder Lawn Care, SRC, Springfield Police Officers Association, D&E Music, Missouri Troopers Association, HandyMan Rental, Aramark, Tim O’Reilly and Knights of Columbus Council #698.
