The police chief in Mt. Vernon says an incident earlier this month where a woman shot herself in the foot at a local Walmart store could have turned out much worse.

In an interview with KY3, Chief David Hubert says the victim, who shot herself after dropping her purse, which had her loaded 38 caliber gun inside of it, could have shot an innocent bystander and the whole thing was very preventable.

Hubert says before you conceal/carry, seek out a qualified trainer who will familiarize you with a weapon and what laws are applicable.

Employees at the store helped the woman, identified as Taylor Susan, 61, by holding pressure on her wound until police and paramedics could get there to take her to the hospital.
