Study: No Cancer Cluster In St. Louis County
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A state study has found no evidence of a cancer cluster in an area of St. Louis County where nuclear waste was produced during the Cold War.
The report from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services released Wednesday is being criticized by some current and former residents who lived near Coldwater Creek in north St. Louis County.
The state study found higher rates of some cancer, but said lifestyle factors like smoking and unhealthy eating habits are likely to blame.
Shari Riley, now 50, grew up in Florissant and often played in the creek. She was diagnosed with rare appendix cancer in 2010.
Riley says the study should look at residents who lived there before radiation was cleaned up, not current residents.
