Arkansas Lawmakers Approve Guns On Campus Bill

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers have given final approval to a bill that would allow college campuses to decide whether to allow faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns.
By a 31-4 vote, the Senate on Monday approved legislation that would leave it up to governing boards for colleges and universities to decide whether to ban concealed handguns on specific campuses, areas of campus or buildings.
The measure now heads to Gov. Mike Beebe's desk, and he's said he'll likely sign it into law.
Public college leaders from around the state dropped their objections after the measure was changed to allow the schools to opt out of allowing concealed weapons.
A similar provision was already included for private colleges and universities.
Schools that opt out would be required to revisit that decision annually.
