Baseball Panthers Complete Season-Opening Sweep
Edited news release from Drury Athletics:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Alex Larkin had four of Drury's 17 hits and John Neill and Matt Borgschulte had three hits and three RBIs apiece as Drury completed a three-game series sweep of Christian Brothers with a 12-2 victory here on Sunday.
The Panthers, now 3-0 under interim head coach Scott Nasby, had five pitchers combine to allow no earned runs and just six hits. The winner of sophomore right-hander and starter Trevor Richards (1-0), who allowed four hits, no earned runs, struck out six and walked one.
Drury jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Matt Borgschulte and an RBI single from Neill, then blew it open with a seven-run third for a 10-0 cushion, sending 11 Panthers to the plate. Neill again had the big hit, with his two-run single to left plating two.
The Panthers completed the scoring with a two-run sixth on infield RBI singles from Larkin and Cole Faulconer, who also had three hits as the designated hitter.
Drury will play its home opener next weekend, hosting Saint Joseph's for two on Saturday and a single game on Sunday in games that aren't Great Lakes Valley Conference contests, despite both being league members.
Neill finished the three-game weekend 7 for 11 with three runs scored and six RBIs, while Borgschulte was 8 for 11 with five runs scored and four driven in to pace a DU attack that outscored the Bucs 28-5 and rapped out 41 hits in the series.
Drury will play its home opener next weekend, hosting Saint Joseph's for two on both Saturday and Sunday in noon starts, games that aren't Great Lakes Valley Conference contests, despite both being league members.
