New Police Academy Class Begins Monday

The Springfield Police Department will begin the 63rd Police Academy for 16 recruits on Feb. 11, 2013.

The class will consist of one female and 15 male recruit officers. The academy will include 1,019 hours of classroom instruction and practical application. Some of the courses in the curriculum include: constitutional and criminal law, criminal investigations, report writing, cultural diversity and many more. The hands-on practical training will include: defensive driving, firearms, defensive tactics, law enforcement driving, and situational training.

The academy will graduate on Aug. 2, 2013. After graduation, the new officers will participate in the Field Training program where they will work with an experienced officer prior to being assigned on their own.
