Alpha House Expansion Meets With Little Resistance
Not an ill word was spoken at tonight's City Council meeting about plans to expand a halfway house in north Springfield.
Alpha House has 50 beds at its facility, which used to be the terminal building at the downtown airport off east Division.
Leaders would like to add ten more beds for federal offenders transitioning out of prison and back into the community, as well as extra office space.
The City's Planning and Development Director Ralph Rognstad says there have been no issues whatsoever in 40 years Alpha House has been running.
He says it makes more sense to expand the facility, which is on the historic sites register, rather than move it somewhere else.
In order to put the plans in motion, City Council has to approve an ordinance rezoning the property.
A vote will come at the next council meeting in two weeks.
