Springfield Puts $72-Million Bond, Levy Increase On Ballot
The Springfield school board has voted to put a $72-million dollar bond issue on the ballot April 2.
The district would use the money to build an elementary school, upgrade technology at schools and pay for repairs to Glendale and Kickapoo High Schools.
Board President Dr. Tom Prater says the district is expecting a big enrollment increase, and is just trying to get ahead of the curve.
Prater says the district has paid off its debts, so the bond issue won't raise any new taxes.
But voters will be asked to approve a 20-cent increase in the operating levy.
Prater says that money would be used to hire new teachers, pay utility bills, and bus students to class.
That would cost the average home owner about $19-dollars a year in taxes.
