State Auditor Trying To Streamline Initiative Petition Process
(Missourinet) - The state auditor is working with the secretary of state's office and the legislature to reform the state's initiative petition process.
State Auditor Tom Schweich says the process in Missouri has spiraled into something other than it was intended to do, which is to give voters an option to pass laws when they feel lawmakers aren't doing their job.
Schweich says last year there were 146 petitions, 50 lawsuits and two initiative making it to the ballot, compared with 16 petitions in 2004, no lawsuits, and two made it to the ballot. Schweich says there's something wrong with the situation.
Five petitions have already been filed this year.
Four would increase the minimum wage, one would cap interest rates on payday loans.
