Shelter's Budgets Hit By Adoption Tax
Every animal that leaves a Missouri shelter eats into their budget.
That's because shelters pay the same fee, called the Missouri Adoption Tax, as commercial breeding facilities.
Some law makers are hoping to get an exemption on the books this year. There used to be one but it was cut more than a year ago.
Shelter leaders say even though it may only be a dollar or so per an adoption, that adds up to a lot of money that could go towards feeding and taking care of rescue animals.
