(MissouriNET) - Across Missouri, dozens of people spent Christmas behind bars for driving drunk. The Highway Patrol says those going out to parties for New Year's need to make plans now to get home safely.

Captain Tim Hull says many communities have free ride home programs for those who are drinking.

"many college campuses are doing that now, as well as groups that give out a number to call. And in some cases, they're free of charge. You can go to the party and not have to worry about driving home once the party's over," says Hull.

Hull says while fatal crashes were way down this Christmas, drunk driving arrests were way up. That's a trend the patrol wants to see drop for New Year's.
