Reeds Spring Pulls Off First Blue And Gold Upset, Beating Clever
The Reeds Spring Wolves have knocked off the previously unbeaten Clever Bluejays 56-54, pulling off the first upset of the 67th Annual Greenwood Blue and Gold Basketball Tournament in Springfield.
Clever, seeded fifth in the Gold Division, missed three free throws in the final minute of regulation, and Austin Selby sank two from the charity stripe for Reeds Spring with four seconds remaining to give his team the win at JQH Arena.
With the game tied 54-54, Clever's Dalton Fisher missed two free throws with 16.5 seconds on the clock. The Wolves got the ball across the halfcourt, then called time out with 9.9 seconds left to set up a play. Fisher then fouled Selby at the top of the key as he was guarding him, setting up the winning free throws.
Selby finished with a game high 28 points for the Wolves, while Clever had three players in double figures (Fisher with 14, Jared Albright with 12, and Matt Hamilton with 11 points.)
Reeds Spring advances to Thursday's quarterfinal round against the Bolivar Liberators. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. at JQH Arena.
Clever will play in the consolation bracket against Mansfield at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hammons Center.
The West Plains Zizzers, picked fourth in the Blue Division, won their first round game over Morrisville 65-22 at Hammons Center.
The Zizzers took a 15-6 lead after the opening quarter, but the Panthers were still in the ball game at the half, 27-18.
West Plains outscored Morrisville 26-2 in the third quarter to pull away as the Panthers managed only four points in the second half.
Cole Butler had 12 points and Logan Miller chipped in 11 for the Zizzers,while Josh Devine's 14 points were tops for the Panthers.
Bolivar, seeded fourth in the Gold Division, defeated Mansfield 56-46 at JQH Arena.
Bolivar had a thin 11-8 lead after the first quarter and 23-18 at the half before going up 44-29 after three quarters.
Senior center Evan Roberts finished with 16 points to lead the Liberators, with junior Coday Garrison putting in 14. Jacob Caruso led the way for the Lions, scoring 16 points, with Carter Quirk adding 11.
