Springfield, MO (December 20, 2012) – This week The Salvation Army will provide Christmas assistance for nearly 1,000 local families. But helping so many requires the help of many others.

Numerous volunteer shopping ‘buddies’ are still  needed at The Salvation Army’s main location – 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway  - today Thursday December 20th until 6 pm and tomorrow Friday December 21st beginning at 8:30 am to distribute toys and food to those receiving assistance. To sign-up please call 862-5509 ext.116. Volunteers for this activity must be at least 18 years old.

“Volunteers are a vital part of any nonprofit organization,” Audrey Esther, Community Relations Director said. “This particular volunteer opportunity is a wonderful way to make a real hands-on difference in the lives of those in need.”

So far, the community has helped The Salvation Army reach about 62% of its $1 million Tree of Lights Christmas Campaign fundraising goal. The funds raised during the annual Tree of Lights campaign allow The Salvation Army to provide much-needed programs and services to thousands of local residents in need all year long.
