While coming home from his second job, an off duty Nixa firefighter spotted a fire on the second story porch of his apartment building.

He quickly jumped into action and literally climbed the outside of the building to the second story porch.

A neighbor in the building pulled the fire alarm pull station to evacuate the building and tossed a fire extinguisher to Firefighter Tommy Goran.

FF Goran had the fire extinguished before the first fire truck arrived. Firefighter Goran demonstrated the mission of the Nixa Fire Protection District tonight with “Service through Commitment”.

Nixa Fire District was dispatched at 8:25pm to the reported “fire on the porch” at the Terraces of Copperleaf and arrived in less than 4 minutes to find the fire had been contained by FF Goran.

The tenant was not home at the time of the fire, but all other occupants of the building were safely evacuated.

The investigation found the fire was started from discarded smoking materials in a plastic pail.

Minor fire damage was contained to the second story porch and all occupants were allowed to reoccupy the building. The complex does have smoke alarms and a sprinkler system.

Nixa fire wants to remind anyone that smokes to properly dispose of their butts in a container that is non-combustible. “This was another close call that could easily have been prevented” Asst. Chief Whitney Weaver
