Fire Marshal: Don't Set Your Tree On Fire
(Missourinet) - As Missourians put up their Christmas trees, we need to take a few simple steps to avoid fires.
The state fire marshal says a dried out Christmas tree can go up in less than seven seconds.
In addition to watering your tree and making sure it's holding moisture, Cole says looking over the lights before re-using them. When they're in storage, mice can get to them and chew the insulation off the wires. And he says never leave decorative lights on, whether they're on your tree or your house, if you're not a home.
Candles can also cause fires, make sure there are adults to supervise before the worst happens.
Cole says says families should go over their evacuation plans, and he asks everyone to have a meeting place outside the home where everyone should meet once they've made it out in the event of a fire.
