Hillcrest And Republic Advance To Finals Of Republic Tournament

  • Republic Vs. Russellville In 48th Annual Republic Invitational Semifinals

The Hillcrest Hornets and the host Republic Tigers advanced to the finals of the 48th Annual Republic Invitational Tournament Friday night.

The Hornets, who trailed for much of the basketball game, put together a late charge to overtake the Rogersville Wildcats, 73-70 in the first semifinal of the night.

Rogersville's Aaron Freeman missed two free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining and Hillcrest clinging to a one point lead. Austin Petry sank two from the charity stripe at the other end of the court to seal the win for the Hornets. A three point attempt at the buzzer didn't fall for the Wildcats.

Thomas Whitaker lit up the scoreboard for Hillcrest, putting in 33 points.

In the second semifinal, Republic beat the Russellville (Arkansas) Cyclones 64-56. The Cyclones made it close in the fourth quarter before the Tigers pulled away late.

Russellville's Dakota Young had 20 points to lead all scorers, with Cody Geiger putting in 14 points for the winning Tigers.

In Saturday's final round of the tournament, Neosho and Lebanon will meet at 11am in the seventh place game, followed by the consolation finals between Rogers (Arkansas) and Ozark at 12:30.

Rogersville and Russellville will play for third place at 2pm, with the Hillcrest-Republic title match set for 3:30 at the high school gym in Republic.
