Springfield City Council To Pick Replacement
With a vacancy left by Tom Bieker leaving Springfield City Council the group met today to decide what to do next.
They voted to start taking applications on January second.
Mayor Bob Stephens says council will pick the replacement, who will serve the remainder of the term, which ends April 2015.
From a press release...
City Council will start taking applications for vacant seat in January
Appointee will serve remainder of term ending in April 2015
City Council will begin taking applications after the first of the year, for the General D seat left vacant following Thomas Bieker’s Nov. 2 resignation. Whoever they appoint will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in April 2015.
City Charter section 2.5 states that vacancies will be filled with a majority City Council vote and the appointee will serve in the position until the next regular city election. While the next City election is in April 2013, the Jan. 15 deadline for filing for that election could make turnaround time for signature collection difficult. Appointing someone after that deadline ensures the appointee will serve the remainder of the current term.
Mayor Bob Stephens pointed out “we are already four weeks into the signature-gathering process for that election. In fairness to that person, we should wait to appoint until afterthat Jan. 15 deadline.”
