Sports Tournaments Bring Visitors To Springfield

A number of high school and other national sporting events are calling Springfield home for their championships. All the extras visitors end up eating in area restaurants, staying in Springfield hotels, and shopping local stores.
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board says they are happy to play a role.
“We’re really excited about bringing a lot of out-of-town visitors to Springfield and Greene County for these four championship events,” said Bob Belote, Director of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.
“While they may affect local traffic at times, the positive impact on our local economy as well as the opportunities for our local athletes are extremely significant.”
Some local events going on:
- Killian Sport Complex, 2141 E. Pythian Ave., hosts the Missouri State High School Athletics Association Girls Softball Championships today through Sunday. Sixteen softball teams from around the state compete today through Saturday.
- Down the road, Cooper Tennis Complex, 2300 E. Pythian Ave., is holding the Missouri State High School Athletics Association Girls Tennis Championships, where 48 players compete in singles and doubles matches through Saturday.
- Across the street, Lake Country Soccer, 2334 E. Pythian Ave., is where the National Christian Home School Boys Soccer Championships takes place. Eighteen Varsity and JV teams are expected.
- Doling Family Center, 301 E. Talmage Ave., and O’Reilly-Tefft Gymnasium, 1408 E. Pythian Ave., along with a number of area schools, host the National Christian Home School Girls Volleyball Championships through Saturday. A total of 60 Varsity, JV and Junior High teams from across the country will compete.
The Park Board says overall the 50+ annual sporting events generate more than $13 million on local revenue.
