Akin Accuses McCaskill Family Of Pocketing Subsidies
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Republican challenger Todd Akin has launched a TV ad claiming the family of Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill "pocketed $40 million of federal subsidies." McCaskill says that's not true.
The ad unveiled Thursday by Akin dubs McCaskill as "corrupt Claire." It cites an Associated Press report that businesses affiliated with McCaskill's husband received $40 million of federal housing subsidies during her first five years in office.
McCaskill's finance reports indicate her husband received between $400,000 and $2.6 million in income from the businesses that got federal payments. But McCaskill's campaign has said none of the federal housing subsidies wound up in the family's personal bank accounts.
Akin is trying to mount a comeback after losing some support because of comments he made about "legitimate rape." He has apologized repeatedly.
