Missouri Lawmakers Consider Sex Crime Revisions
(Missourinet)-Lawmakers in Jefferson City are working on revisions to the Missouri Criminal Code that deal with sex crimes.
Colleen Coble with the Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence says the focus for conviction needs to shift from the use of force to lack of consent.
A victim of sexual assault told the joint legislative committee about being sexually assaulted while under sedation at a hospital. Lisa Keithley says the assault was caught on surveillance video. But because she could not verbally refuse, her attacker was convicted on a misconduct charge and given a year in the county jail, a suspended sentence and two years probation.
The current law dates from the mid 1970's.
